במהלך לימודיך באוניברסיטת ליברטי, אתה באמת זוכר שישראל שימשה נושא חשוב ומשמעותי שנדון במהלך לימודיך?
כשהשתתפתי באוניברסיטת ליברטי, כבר היה לי תואר תיאולוגי ולכן נרשמתי לתוכנית ייעוץ ברמה לתואר שני. בתכנית הייעוץ לא הוזכר נושא ישראל. לו הייתי נרשם לתכנית התיאולוגית, אין לי ספק שזה היה מוזכר באופן תדיר. עם זאת, כסטודנט בליברטי, הייתי מאוד מודע לעמדתו הפרו-ישראלית של ד"ר ג'רי פאלוול, ד"ר אלמר טאון. ד"ר הרולד וילמינגטון והאוניברסיטה בכלל. הייתי מודע לעמדתם הפרו-ישראלית באמצעות שמיעתם מדברים בעניין, ספריהם והצהרותיהם לתקשורת.

הייתי רוצה לחשוב כך, אבל המשימה גדולה ועם פלטפורמת ההשפעה הקטנה שלי, לא עשיתי הרבה כמו פסטורים דוגמת ד"ר פלוול, ד"ר ג'ון הייגי וכו'. עם זאת, אני מרגיש בנוח שעשיתי מה יכולתי כדי להשפיע על הלב והמוח של מאמינים כלפי ישראל ולהילחם באנטישמיות.

כן, אני זוכר היטב את הנושא ודיברתי בפומבי על כך שירושלים היא בירת ישראל הנצחית, כתבתי מכתבים לחברי קונגרס ודיברתי איתם באופן אישי על כך. נושא הזכות של ישראל על הארץ ובירתה היא ירושלים ולא תל אביב הם נושאים שאני מאוד נלהב מהם!

During your studies at Liberty University, do you really remember that Israel served as an important and significant issue that was discussed during your studies?
When I attended Liberty, I already had a theological degree and so, I was enrolled in a graduate-level counseling program. In the counseling program, the subject of Israel was not mentioned. If I would have been enrolled in the theological program, I have no doubt that it would have been frequently mentioned. However, as a student at Liberty, I was very much aware of the pro-Israel stance of Dr. Jerry Falwell, Dr. Elmer Towns. Dr. Harold Wilmington, etc., and the university in general. I was made aware of their pro-Israel stance by hearing them speak on the matter, their books, and statements made to the news media.
My main thesis tries to prove that the evangelical political power for Israel was built through knowledge debaters like you and others, who when they graduated acted to strengthen knowledge about Israel. Do you feel that this is indeed something you have done for your community?
I feel that I have. In my opportunities to speak at various churches and meetings of associational churches, I have spoken hundreds of times on the fact that Israel was, is, and will always be God’s chosen people. This past week, I surveyed the messages that I have shared around the world (in 70 countries), and discovered that I have spoken more than 12,000 times and 20% of those messages had to do with Israel either in a major or minor way. Manuscripts of those messages have been disseminated to thousands of people over the last 45 years and frequently published in ecclesiastical newspapers. I have led 4 tours of Israel, taking with me more than 120 people, to introduce others to wonders of the Jewish nation and Jewish people.
In the context of the issue of political involvement. Do you remember hosting candidates for various positions in which you encouraged your community to explain the importance of Israeli-US relations through masses, leading conversations and hosting candidates?
No, I have not hosted political candidates in a public meeting because of my role as a pastor. The Johnson Amendment, which was repealed by President Donald Trump, was in place until the last two years of my ministry, which prohibited political activity in churches unless both sides of an issue had equal time. I did not want to give those with whom I vehemently disagreed a platform, so I did not host political candidates. However, having said that, I have gone to state legislatures and lobbied on behalf of multiple issues including the sovereign right of Israel to exist. I have also spoken to multiple national and state legislators privately and encouraged a pro-Israel stance.
Do you encourage the community to send their position to a congressman representing your district, the senator from your country, the US president or any other political figure when there is an issue important to Israel? If so, do you remember in which cases, and did you feel the community referred Yours did indeed receive an answer?
Yes, on multiple occasions over the last 45 years I have encouraged the people that I have led to contact their congressmen and senators, provided a sample script for letters, addresses to send the letters, and even offered to mail the letters at my personal expense. The issue that I have repeatedly responded to was when American politicians were trying to force Israel to trade land for peace.
Do you feel that you and/or your community are succeeding in influencing the agenda of politicians through community involvement and making a clear voice on issues that you believe in, including the importance of Israel?
I would like to think so, but the task is great and with my small platform of influence, I have not done as much as men like Dr. Falwell, Dr. John Hagee, etc. However, I do feel comfortable that I have done what I could to influence hearts and minds toward Israel and to fight anti-Semitism.
My research focuses mainly on the 1980s to mid-1990s on the decision to pass the law on the relocation of the US Embassy to Jerusalem in 1995. Do you remember whether you and/or your community made their voices heard, on this important issue? That the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel?
Yes, I do remember the issue well and spoke publicly on the fact that Jerusalem is the eternal capital of Israel, wrote letters to congressmen, and spoke to them personally about it. The issue of Israel’s right to the land and her capital is Jerusalem and not Tel Aviv are issues that I am extremely passionate about!
